Updates from Delhi and Kota.....
Hello Friends,
i am back to my blog after another long period of silence. well there are a few updates i have to give you. Let's see them one by one.
The first was that we were made to submit a research proposal for a scholarship named Okita Memorial Scholarship. It is awarded to people doing research that can help for betterment of Indo-Japanese Relations (Don't worry, these are just words that serve as excuses for parties and dinners at posh hotels ;-p). So i submitted my proposal titled ‘Freeters and Call Center Executives - A Comparative Study of Youth of Japan and India'. i had written a small report on Freeters of Japan. These are youths between the age of 19 to 34, who are not fully employed, nor studying. Something like the stage that all of us would be entering from now on. Rather some of us are already feeling the heat of it. The Call Center Executives in India too give me an impression as the Freeters of India. Of course, they get a much better pay as compared to their Japanese Counterparts, but the point is that they are finally left skill-less. There are many more aspects to this so those who would like to read the draft can get in touch with me.
The reason to write all this is that i have been selected for the interview of this Scholarship and will be taking it with my classmates. It is on monday (day after tomorrow). Let's see what happens.
The second thing was my sessional exam. In JNU (most of you must be familiar with this short form by now. well it stands for Jawaharlal Nehru University), we have an exam every month. So i had the first sessional last month. Just want to talk a bit about my interpretation exam. Well, it was all ok untill the exam started. i was on time, my professor came on time n looked in a good mood. When he started reading the first line of the paragraph we had to interprete, i felt something tickling my leg. It was somewhere around my left calf. And then, i could feel a tremendous burning sensation there. IT WAS AN ANT, THE BIG ONE, THAT WAS BITING ME. i was blank n couldnt answer the first question. Somehow i managed to crush the ant (Sorry Gandhiji, but i had to kill it), and then could finish the exam well. So another lesson for interpreters - just when you go to pee before the interpretation session starts, confirm that there are no ants in your trousers :-)
Anyways, let me tell you about another experience in Kota. Well, many of you may not be aware of this small town in State of Rajasthan in India. There was an interpretation assignment in a big company over there and i was asked to help them. They were expanding their PVC production capacity and installing a new Polymer Reactor. The technology for that was imported from Japan and they had a Japanese technician to guide them to install the reactor. After a long delay, the work started, again got delayed and started again. But by that time, it was already 8 days, i had given them another interpreter who replaced me and was back in New Delhi. All said and done, it was a nice experience to see Indian way of thinking and compare it with the Japanese. Would've loved to tell you all more about it, but my profession doesn't allow me to disclose any further. Just to tell you that it was a great experience and could learn a lot.
So that was that. i am back in Delhi, back to school and studies. Back to teaching at the Japan Cultural Information Center (JCIC), and Japanese Language Promotion Center (JAPROC).
We are having a pretty free weekend this time and have two holidays in next week. Hope i can update the blog more frequently now and share things with you all.
Regards to all,
